- Slicing the wheat genome.
Researchers now have a draft sequence of the
bread wheat genome, achieving a major milestone on the road to creating
the full reference sequence of one of the world’s most widely grown
cereal crops. Their work gives
scientists a tool for rapidly locating specific genes on individual
wheat chromosomes, a resource that will help them improve wheat breeding
to meet ever-higher food demands, accelerate the development of new
wheat varieties, and increase the resistance of wheat to environmental
stresses.
